Before Robert M. Shipley founded GIA in 1931, diamond descriptions were subjective and misleading. GIA invented the universally recognized 4Cs (Color, Clarity, Cut, Carat Weight) and the D-to-Z Color Scale.
In late 2020, GIA transitioned from generic descriptive ranges to offering full 4Cs grading on lab grown diamonds, providing identical clarity and color precision as natural stones.
Using advanced photoluminescence and infrared FTIR spectroscopy, GIA definitively states whether the diamond was grown via CVD or HPHT.
GIA is historically known for its conservative color and clarity grading, meaning a GIA F-color or VS1 clarity is strictly scrutinized under controlled lighting standards.
All GIA Lab-Grown reports are issued in high-security digital dossier format, eliminating paper loss and allowing instant cloud verification anywhere in the world.
Both GIA and IGI are world-class institutions. When purchasing a lab grown diamond, here are the real-world operational and commercial differences:
When lab grown diamonds emerged commercially in 2010-2015, GIA declined to grade them with specific 4Cs grades, instead giving vague ranges (e.g. "Near Colorless", "Included"). In response, IGI stepped up and created the global standard for lab diamonds.
By the time GIA adopted full 4Cs grading for lab diamonds in late 2020, IGI had already built the entire international infrastructure and wholesale liquidity network for lab grown diamonds.
Choose GIA if you desire the historic prestige of the GIA name on your documentation, or if you prefer a laboratory with the absolute most conservative clarity boundary tolerances.
At New Origin Diamonds, we maintain both IGI and GIA certified stones in our Surat inventory so you can choose the documentation that best aligns with your preferences.
