Founded in Antwerp in 1975, IGI was the very first international gemological laboratory to embrace lab grown diamonds and establish precise, uncompromising grading standards for them.
While other institutions initially hesitated, IGI developed dedicated scientific equipment and testing protocols to accurately grade lab-grown diamonds as early as 2005.
IGI assigns specific cut grades—including the revered Ideal cut grade—not only to round diamonds but also provides full proportion breakdowns for fancy shapes.
Every single IGI certified lab diamond carries the mandatory micro-laser inscription "LABGROWN IGI" along with its certificate number permanently engraved on the girdle.
Retail jewelers and diamond wholesalers from New York to London and Hong Kong universally accept and price lab grown diamonds based on IGI grading certificates.
According to the International Gemological Institute (IGI), the 4Cs—Cut, Color, Clarity, and Carat Weight—form the universal scientific language of diamonds. IGI applies this rigorous framework uniformly to both natural and laboratory-grown diamonds.
While nature or laboratory growth dictates a diamond's color and clarity, human craftsmanship dictates its cut. IGI considers cut the most vital of the 4Cs because even a chemically flawless, colorless diamond will look dull and lifeless if cut improperly.
For white diamonds, color grading actually measures the absence of color. IGI evaluates each gemstone table-down under standardized, daylight-equivalent lighting against an internationally certified master set of control stones.
Diamonds possessing intentional, saturated body color outside the Z scale (such as Pink, Blue, Canary Yellow, Green, and Red) are graded by IGI under specialized Fancy Color criteria: Faint, Very Light, Light, Fancy Light, Fancy, Fancy Intense, Fancy Vivid, and Fancy Deep.
Clarity evaluates a diamond’s relative freedom from internal features (called inclusions: pinpoint crystals, feathers, clouds) and surface characteristics (called blemishes: polish lines, scratches).
| FL / IF | Flawless / Internally Flawless: No inclusions visible under 10x magnification. Extremely pure. |
| VVS1 – VVS2 | Very Very Slightly Included: Minute inclusions extremely difficult for seasoned gemologists to see under 10x. |
| VS1 – VS2 | Very Slightly Included: Minor inclusions difficult to somewhat easy to locate under 10x; 100% eye-clean. |
| SI1 – SI2 | Slightly Included: Noticeable inclusions under 10x; typically eye-clean in SI1. |
| I1 – I2 – I3 | Included: Obvious inclusions visible to the naked human eye that affect transparency. |
Carat refers strictly to a diamond's weight, not its visual size. One carat equals 200 milligrams (0.2 grams), subdivided into 100 points (e.g. a 0.75-carat stone is 75 points). IGI measures diamond weight to the thousandth of a carat using electronic micro-balances.
Two diamonds of the exact same 2.00-carat weight can have significantly different face-up visual sizes depending on how they were cut:
Weight is hidden in a bulky pavilion or thick girdle. Stone looks smaller (e.g., 7.8mm) and leaks light through the bottom.
Optimal depth ratio (59–62.5%) gives full 8.15mm+ face-up diameter with 100% total internal light reflection.
An IGI Laboratory Grown Diamond Report contains extensive gemological data. Here is what each section tells you about your gemstone:
Begins with "LG" (e.g. LG628475910). Scanning the QR code takes you directly to IGI's official online verification database.
Carat: Precise weight to 2 decimal places. Color: D through Z scale. Clarity: FL to I3 with plotted inclusion chart. Cut: Ideal, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
Provides key proportions essential for sparkle: Table %, Total Depth %, Crown Angle & Height, Pavilion Angle & Depth, and Girdle Thickness.
The comments section explicitly notes whether the diamond was created by CVD or HPHT synthesis and confirms its Type IIa crystal purity.
While GIA remains the historical king of mined diamonds, IGI is the gold standard for lab grown diamonds. Here is how they compare side-by-side:
| Comparison Point | IGI (International Gemological Institute) | GIA (Gemological Institute of America) |
|---|---|---|
| Lab-Grown Market Share | ~85% - 90% Worldwide | ~5% - 10% Worldwide |
| Cut Grading | Assigns "Ideal" cut grade + proportion diagrams | Assigns "Excellent" top cut grade |
| Report Availability | Physical paper certificate + digital QR verification | Digital-only dossier (PDF) for lab diamonds |
| Turnaround & Cost | Fast & cost-effective (savings passed to buyer) | Higher lab fee & longer submission wait times |
| Wholesale Trade Liquidity | Universal benchmark used by all major manufacturers | Selective inventory, slight brand premium for certificate |
Verdict: For lab grown diamonds, an IGI certificate provides identical peace of mind, full 4Cs disclosures, and maximum dollar value without paying an unnecessary markup for laboratory paperwork.
