The Magic of the Flat-Bottom Dome

Developed in Antwerp and Amsterdam in the 1500s, the Rose Cut was designed to mimic the spiraling petals of an unfurling rosebud. It is fundamentally different from any modern diamond cut.

While modern brilliant diamonds carry over 60% of their carat weight in a pointed cone beneath the girdle (the pavilion), a rose cut has a completely flat polished bottom. All of the diamond's carat weight is concentrated in its low-domed crown, which is faceted with 3 to 24 triangular facets.

This delivers two extraordinary benefits:
1. Double the Surface Area: A 1.00ct rose cut diamond has the same visual millimeter diameter as a 1.50ct to 1.75ct round brilliant!
2. Watery Luster: Instead of rapid, glittery dispersion, a rose cut produces calm, shimmering, watery reflections that resemble sunlight bouncing off a tranquil pond.

Frequently Asked Questions

Key facts and guidance about certified rose cut lab created diamonds.

A Rose Cut diamond is an antique diamond cut dating back to the 1500s. It is characterized by a completely flat bottom (no pavilion or culet) and a domed crown faceted with 3 to 24 triangular facets that meet at a single apex, resembling a blooming rosebud.

In a modern round brilliant diamond, over 60% of the carat weight is hidden below the girdle in the pavilion. Because a rose cut has no pavilion, 100% of its carat weight is spread across the flat face-up dome. As a result, a 1.00ct rose cut diamond has the visible millimeter diameter of a 1.50ct to 1.75ct round brilliant!

A rose cut does not produce the rapid, disco-ball scintillation of a modern brilliant cut. Instead, it reflects a soft, subtle, watery, glass-like luster. It emits romantic flashes of light that feel organic, understated, and poetic rather than flashy.

Because there is no pavilion protruding beneath the stone, a rose cut diamond can be set completely flush against the finger. This makes it the most comfortable, wearable diamond ring for nurses, doctors, athletes, and anyone who wears gloves or prefers a ring that never snags.

Direct from our Surat diamond factory, a certified 2 carat rose cut lab grown diamond (D-F Color, VVS/VS Clarity) costs between $700 and $980 USD. In boutique designer jewelry stores, the same certified diamond retails for $2,800 to $4,000 USD.
