Before modern mathematical diamond formulas were established in 1919 by Marcel Tolkowsky, diamonds were cut by hand under gas lamp and candlelight. Diamond cutters sought to maximize color dispersion and rainbow "fire" rather than rapid white scintillation.

The Old European Cut is characterized by four unmistakable gemological features:
1. Small Table: A petite center table (38% to 45% of diamond diameter) compared to 54–58% in modern round cuts.
